EC under pressure for excessive controversy over past two elections: CEC

Shawdesh Desk:

Chief election commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Sunday said that the current Election Commission was under pressure due to the past two general elections in 2014 and 2018.

‘As a result, the responsibility of the commission has increased,’ the CEC said while inaugurating a training workshop at the Election Training Institute in Dhaka.

‘A special aspect of the election that we are going to hold is that the level of controversy is excessive. The pressure of 2014 and 2018 is upon us. So, we are working tirelessly,’ he said.

He said that the EC wanted to take the challenge of holding free, fair and peaceful elections.

The crisis in the election is a crisis of trust, he said and added that there should not be a crisis of trust in the elections the EC would hold in the future.

‘Those of us who will conduct the elections, from the election officials to those of you who are there, will take responsibility according to the RPO. If you have any questions, make sure to discuss them. The responsibility has to be fulfilled strictly. We will also monitor it strictly from the EC,’ he added.

50 upazila nirbahi officers and 50 election officials participated in the two-day residential workshop.
